How many times have you finally gotten around to do something and said to yourself or others that you can’t believe you waited so long. Perhaps you kicked yourself for waiting so long. Many things that we put off for ourselves can fall into that category.
Hearing Instruments usually fall into that category. Everyone is different. I had a returning patient a few month ago that kept putting off getting new hearing instruments “because he knew as soon as he got them something better would come out’. This went on for over a year. Finally, his need (and his wife’s need) to hear better won out and he got new hearing instruments. (His were 7 years old). In the last 7 years he got an iPhone and an iPad. We hooked up the new hearing instruments and dialed him in and the smile on his face was worth it all. His response; “oh…oh…these are so clear!”
His wife’s response back to him; “ are they better honey?” His response; “Yes, I should have done this a couple years ago!” His wife’s response was a smirk and a shake of her head.
Recently I had a patient with a dead ear on one side so we decided to do a cros hearing system and provide them with 360 degree hearing. Because they had had the dead ear for many years they were kind of used to not hearing people on that side. After a comphrensive hearing examination and discussion of options and possible corrections… they were fit with the cros system. (This system looks like a hearing instrument on both side of the head but in fact the device on the dead ear picks up the sounds on the dead side and wirelessly transmits that signal to the better ear. For years they went without hearing. Their response; “I can’t believe it…I can hear..I can hear my voice… this is crazy… thank you for convincing me to try better hearing!”
It is a rare individual that can not hear better with the hearing technology that is available in today’s market. Some people take longer to get used to hearing their voice and environmental sounds than others…but patience and diligence always pays off in the end.
One thing is certain. Do yourself, your brain and your nerves a favor and stop putting off or finding excuses to not correct your hearing. The longer you wait to stimulate the damaged hearing hairs and stimulate the auditory nerve to the brain the easier it is to assimilate all that is in your hearing world.
