The Pain of an Ear Infection

Ear pain is often caused by a respiratory infection. Allergies can sometimes lead to a sinus infection. As the sinus’s drain the fluid can get
stuck in the middle ear and not flow down the Eustachian tube. Fluid build up against the back side of the ear drum puts pressure on the eardrum
which causes inflammation and pain.

This swelling can also cause diminished hearing. The hearing loss can be great or it may be a little muffled. If the fluid does not clear out of the
inner ear naturally then a hearing loss may develop. It is recommended that everyone should “equalize” their middle and outer ear several times a
day. To do this… you hold your nose closed on both sides and then blow into your nose.. your eardrum will pop or push outward. This helps to move
the fluid out of the middle ear cavity. I once had an ENT tell me that everyone should “equalize” 7 times per day. Everyone…not just if you are
clogged up. If you have middle ear pain and inflammation then you will probably not be very successful until some of the fluid dissipates. Sometimes middle ear infections may develop further and lead to inner ear infections. These can also be painful but because the inner ear also
provides our balance the result can be pain along with dizziness.

While adults get middle and inner ear infections they are much more common in young children. Depending upon the symptoms and the pain level, most people tend to wait a few days to determine if their “uncomfortable ear” is going to clear up on its own. If the pain and pressure increases or simple won’t subside then it is best to see either your primary physician or an ENT to determine if you need to be prescribed antibiotics. It is possible to get a double ear infection…one in each ear… at the same time… it is rare but possible. Make sure and wash your hands and clean your hearing aids to help reduce the spread of infections. To Hear Better Is To Live Better!
