How Hearing Aids Contribute to Better Health

Hearing loss is not just a mere inconvenience… it is a significant health issue. Hearing loss can actually affect every aspect of your life. Correcting your hearing loss
and wearing hearing aids will of course give you better hearing and communication abilities. Wearing appropriately fitting hearing aids are directly linked to better physical, mental and emotional health.

Wearing hearing aids a minimum of 12 hours per day helps to combat cognitive decline. Studies show that untreated hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia. This is because the hearing loss places “cognitive load” on the brain. This means the brain has to work much harder to process sound… the brain has to pull resources from memory and thinking sections of the brain. Wearing hearing aids 12 hours per day reduces this strain by amplifying sound and improved speech clarity. Thus, the brain processes sound more easily and decreases cognitive load. A study by Johns Hopkins University found hearing aid users had a lower risk of cognitive declined compared to those with untreated hearing loss.

Not only will you be able to communicate better and more easily… you will have and enhanced mental and emotional well-being. Struggling to hear conversations can lead to isolation and withdrawal from social situations…thus; leading to loneliness and depression. Hearing aids help users to stay connected to family and friends. Improving communication abilities also help people to feel more confident and independent.

Staying independent is usually a wish for most adults. Wearing hearing aids allow users to hear alarms, phone calls, oncoming traffic and someone approaching
from behind. Safety is improved. When your hearing is impaired and not corrected it makes it more difficult to detect these necessary sounds and that will result in an
increased risk of falls and accidents. Wearing hearing aids improves spatial awareness and therefore users are more aware of their environment and lead a safer life.

At the end of the day… a person with a hearing loss has spent a lot of unnecessary energy just trying to hear, communicate…and just get through the day. Many people with hearing loss experience fatigue due to the extra effort required to listen and interpret sounds throughout the day. Hearing aids lessens the mental strain
on the brain by making the sounds easier to process.

Hearing aids are essential tools for maintaining your health and well-being. They protect your brain function, reduce fatigue, reduce accidents and promote safety all while helping to keep you independent and active. Correcting your hearing loss by simply wearing appropriately fitting hearing aids is a simple and proactive step toward living a fuller, healthier life.
